BOOKS

The Routledge Companion to Business Journalism, Routledge, 2024

  • Alongside some 50 scholars worldwide, I contributed a chapter to this new textbook on business and economics reporting, edited by Joseph Weber of the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. My chapter explored the evolution of ethics codes, with a focus on how a 1984 insider-trading scandal at The Wall Street Journal influenced standards.

The Quiet Zone: Unraveling the Mystery of a Town Suspended in Silence, HarperCollins, 2021

  • This narrative nonfiction book explored the role of technology in our lives through my journey into an Appalachian town where cell service is outlawed.
  • Praise: Washington Post top 10 book of the month; Amazon book of the month; one of USA Today’s “5 books not to miss”; The New York Times called it “a reminder of the simple pleasure of reconnecting with real people in real life.”
TEACHING

Visiting assistant professor at Providence College, Providence, RI, August 2023–Present

  • I have taught the core Writing 1 course ENG 101 on the theme of “the wild.” Students learn grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, correct usage as well as paragraph organization and essay development through exploration of the works of Henry David Thoreau, John Muir, Edward Abbey, Jon Krakauer, and others.
  • I developed and taught the Writing 2 elective Business Journalism (ENG 301). Students learn the mechanics of a business news article, monitor how public companies interact with the stock market, and research, interview and write their own pieces of business journalism.
  • I also developed and taught the upper level course Sports Journalism (ENG 470). Students learn the nuts and bolts of reporting and writing sports stories, from basic game reports to in-depth investigations, while also gaining a historical appreciation for the genre by reading works by Darcy Frey, John McPhee, George Plimpton, David Remnick, Gay Talese, and others.

Adjunct professor at The King’s College, New York, August 2019–December 2022

  • I taught the core course Media Law and Ethics, which covered the philosophical underpinnings of the First Amendment; the evolution of U.S. media law from the Sedition Act to Sullivan v. New York Times; as well as other Supreme Court decisions that set legal boundaries for journalists, such as the Pentagon Papers case.
  • I developed an advanced reporting class exploring themes and reporting techniques from Robert Caro’s Pulitzer-winning biography “The Power Broker.” Students read the book and visited relevant sites around New York, speaking with officials and historians to grapple with the controversial projects of master builder Robert Moses. Students then conducted their own deeply researched, long-form investigation into an aspect of Moses’s legacy.

Adjunct professor at Seton Hall University, South Orange, NJ, Fall 2022

  • I taught the core journalism course Writing for the Media, which introduced students to news article writing, press releases, and audiovisual scripts, and skills such as interviewing, research, fact-checking, using quotations, and Associated Press style.

Adjunct professor at Mitchell College, New London, CT, Spring 2022

  • I taught a communications elective on interviewing, which covered informational, journalistic, survey, employment, and persuasive interviews.

Adjunct professor at the Royal University of Phnom Penh, Spring 2009

  • I taught a reporting and editing course at Cambodia’s top journalism school.
